Sampling error: Fine needle aspirate of lymph nodes are not ideal for ruling out abnormal findings. Especially, with lymphomas there may be areas within the ln that are not involved and sampling of these areas may be misleading. Excisional biopsy is the gold standard, as it allows for assessment of individual cells and architecture of lymph node and adequate tissue for specialty workup.

Yes, it is possible: Fna biopsies sample very few cells. There are unique diagnostic characteristics in a lymph node involved by lymphoma (any lymphoma) and in particular burkitt's lymphoma. In addition, pathologists want to run additional specialized testing, including dna tests and antibody based tests that are best done on a whole lymph node, but may be difficult to do on a few cells collected with a small needle.
