Misconception: The cervix becomes softer with pregnancy and the mucus plug is present and observed (sometimes) at the end of the pregnancy. The changes are not that obvious very quickly so this is not a useful sign of early pregnancy.

1-2 days: The cervical mucus becomes thin and watery to allow sperm entry into the uterus and tubes. The change is largely related to the estrogen hormone increase leading to ovulation. After ovulation, the ovary produces Progesterone (p4), which prepares the endometrium for implantation. P4 also changes mucus to thick dense mucus blocking sperm. P4 in bcp also helps with contraception.
