Unfortunately yes: Many different factors are involved in hypertension. Age plays a big role as the arteries "stiffen" over time. While weight reduction & regular exercise help prevent this there is no panacea as more than 75% of us develop HTN at some point in our lives.

Stress and diet: Elevated BP can also be caused by mental or emotional stress or diet related such as high salt or caffeine or alcohol -- and then there is a true essential hypertension that is quite common with the onset after the age of 30 and you would need medicine for this condition.
