A member asked:

How do diabetes and smoking lead to clogged arteries?

A doctor has provided 1 answer
Dr. Emily Lu answered

Multiple mechanisms: Diabetic patients may develop problems with the integrity of the walls of their blood vessels and with their blood coagulation pathways. Smoking can also damage blood vessel walls, alters blood coagulation pathways, and create free radicals that further stress the system. Furthermore, smoking and diabetes both lead to high blood pressure and high cholesterol which worsen cardiovascular function.
