There are 3 pairs of major salivary glands called parotid, submandibular below the lower jaw and submental beneathtt he chin .We have to differentiate the adenomas -benign tumours from hypertrophy and stones causing blocking of salivary ducts , and the gland enlargements. Hunger: I'm not sure what you mean. You'll salivate if you're hungry. If your salivary glands are swollen, they could be blocked with a stone or thick mucus. Dehydration can be part of the problem there, also infection, and sometimes autoimmune disease.

Usually bad: When there is an obstruction of the salivary gland, there usually is an infection that follows. So when the stone or obstruction is removed, you will have puss expressed from the duct. It doesnt taste good from what patients tell me.
