Not necessarily: An unna boot is a medicated gauze bandages used to treat venous stasis ulcers. The bandage is impregnated with zinc oxide and calamine which are thought to help promote healing, act as an antiseptic and have anti-itching properties. These boots are wrapped from the toes to just below the knee and are typically left on for one week. Venous stasis ulcers can be painful- this provides relief for many.

Sometimes: Most people are happy to have compression on their legs when they have significant venous or lymphatic insufficiency. Unna boots are one kind of compression. If these are not comfortable then you choose another form of compression.

Should be: If an unna boot is applied properly it should be quite comfortable. Often it is more comfortable to have it on than to have it off.
