Your crackling noise is called 'crepitus', as the disc is struggling to glide over the glenoid fossa on top of your condyle. As the disc get stuck, it gives rise to condition of 'close' or 'open' lock. If it temporary stuck and then sling across, that forms a 'click', which occurs around 21mm of the mouth opening.
