Different reasons: There are different reasons for high blood pressure (high bp), and some people have it for no identifiable reason. A primary care doctor can evaluate to look for high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (artery disease), for kidney disease or narrowing of the kidney arteries, for unusual hormonal problems, etc... Certain foods can worsen cholesterol or can affect BP over the long term.

Mostly unknown: In more than 90% of the cases the reason for high blood pressure is not known. Reducing intake of salt and exercising helps. Please see this site for more info. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0001502/.
