Altered growth: Its best to try to discontinue the pacifier once the teeth begin to erupt into the mouth. Once the permanant front teeth begin to come in at about age 5-7, it will alter their growth.

OK for short term: Sucking on a pacifier is very soothing for a baby. Long term it may cause the anterior teeth fo flair outward causing an open bite. Using a pacifier up to maybe age 3-4 should not be a problem. It is better than a thumb sucking habit. You can always take the pacifier away.

Shift teeth: If your baby doesn't have teeth, then the pacifer if fine. If you use a pacifier while teeth are present, the constant force on the teeth from the pacifer will cause the teeth to shift.
