Night guard: We all grind our teeth periodically. We usually do it in response to stress in our lives. Grinding can be very destructive and can result in wearing down teeth, cracks in teeth, muscle soreness, tooth pain, headaches, etc. Wearing a night guard can help prevent new damage to your teeth, can prevent existing damage from getting worse, will allow tight muscles to relax, and can help you stop grind.

Night guard: You may not ever stop grinding your teeth. It can be genetic and unavoidable. It may also be stress related. There may be other causes as well. What you can do is minimize stress and wear a nite guard. You should visit a dentist with extra training in occlusion like pankey or dawson, who will make you a custom therapeutic appliance, much different from a generic night guard. Google pankey dentists.

Dentist/specialist: You may not be able to completely stop the "grinding" or bruxism; however, see your dentist for evaluation as some type of protective device (like a bite splint) is likely to be recommended to prevent the damage to your teeth.

Easy answer: Easy answer is night guard to control symptoms, reduce damage to teeth, relax muscles, protect jaw joint. Night guard does not treat the cause of your problem, only the symptoms. Have your dentist check your occlusion. If you have a malocclusion it may be the cause of your parafunctional habit and you may benefit from an orthodontic consultation.
