Barium Swallow: Good day;
Why would you wish to swallow Barium? There is an upper GI series where the test is used to visualize and stomach; however if that is not the case I would not recommend swallowing Barium.

Are you having: an upper GI series or esophagram/barium swallow? Unless you aspirate the barium into your lungs, it should have no effect on you when used appropriately for diagnostic purposes. It is inert and not absorbed by your GI system.

A 28-year-old male asked:
What is the definition or description of: barium?

Chemical: Barium is a chemical element with symbol ba and atomic number 56. It is the fifth element in group 2, a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal. Because of its high chemical reactivity barium is never found in nature as a free element. Its hydroxide was known in pre-modern history as baryta; this substance does not occur as a mineral, but can be prepared by heating barium carbonate.

Can you tell me what are barium studies?

Barium studies: are x-ray tests used to examine the digestive tract (colon,esophagus, stomach, and small intestine). Because these organs are not visible on x-rays,barium is used as contrast, a liquid that shows up on x-rays. The barium coats the lining, making the outline of these organs visible on the xray.This test is useful for diagnosing cancers, ulcers, strictures, and other abnormalities.
