Eye curvature: Lenses used by eye doctors to determine your need for refraction and eyeglasses, are based upon regular curves which for astigmatism optically are called toric. If the astigmatism is due to scar and some intrinsic disease like keratoconus, then the curve does not follow the toric pattern and the astigmatism is termed irregular. This may require a hard lens for correction.

Correctability: Regular astigmatism is a refractive error produced when your eye generates an image as if the light rays passed through a regular shaped glass football. Irregular astigmatism is when the football is not shaped regularly, e.g. One end is fatter than the other. It is very difficult to fully correct vision by any technique in cases of irregular astigmatism; contacts are useful.
