Light Skin = Risk: People with light skin are at higher risk for skin cancer with prolonged sun exposure. If you are fair skinned and tend to burn in the sun, you should use sun screen generously, wear a hat and protective clothing when out in the sun, and minimize your overall sun exposure time in a bathing suit. Choose sunscreen with uva and uvb protection and minimum spf 30.

Not necessarilyt: A family history is extremely important. There are groups of scandinavian origin who have a higher incidence with even normal sun exposure. The bes t defense is protection especially if their will be extended exposure. Any suspicious new lesion in exposed area should be biopsied early.
