Mind: I have never treated a denture patient who did not wish they had kept their teeth. Dentures require constant upkeep and a steep learning curve. With your teeth you can bite with 300lbs/sq inch; with full dentures it is 30lbs/sq inch. Denture patients complain about their food choices as they cannot eat all they want given the lack of mastication force.

Yes, but.....: False teeth are never as good as real teeth. If your teeth are able to be saved its usually worth it. Unless you are talking about implants, then satisfaction is very high for false teeth.

Yes: There are an estimated 20 million people wearing dentures in the us. From a cosmetic perspective, we can make dentures that are not noticeable. For many years it has been the treatment of choice for complete loss of teeth (since george washington). Modern dentistry has improved the comfort, and retention of dentures, they are lighter, stronger and can now be anchored through implants.

Yes!: False teeth can be comfortable. They can be a tremendous improvement for many patients. Chewing function can be dramatically enhanced. I would say many patients value having false teeth.

False teeth: Yes people are satisfied with dentures and even appreciate them when they are well fitting. Especially after they have had many dental problems. But i don't know of anybody who doesn't wish they had taken care of there teeth so they have a healthy natural smile that can chew food properly.

To go back in time..: People tend to accommodate to what they have to live with. We easily forget what we had before. It's only early on that we appreciate what we had. It is rare for someone to feel that false teeth are as good as natural healthy teeth. Even those individuals who say they "don't mind"....Ask them if they would rather go back in time, take better care of their teeth and still have them?

Change is inevitable: A patient who gets dentures in their 30's will likely wake up 20 years later to find much less jawbone to hold their "teeth" in and a facial appearance that may seem sunken in. Bone without teeth slowly melts away, making it ever-harder to make a well-fitting, stable denture. Lesson: try to keep your teeth healthy for as long as possible.

No adults are happy: Who would ever be happy with false teeth? Patients who have dentures really are not happy with the teeth. They say they might be but they really are not. They may get by in life but do live and enjoy the full potential of permanent teeth with dental implants. Who wants to be taking plastic teeth in and out their mouths everyday. Teeth are meant to stay in the mouth permanently.

What's other option?: Your questions is really based on whether someone has accepted a reality in their life. Dentures are not a fun and pleasant thing to have to get used to. They will never function as well as what god gave us. However, some people make up their minds that they will adapt and do well. In their situation, they are successful wearers of dentures. Others, can't, or don't want to accept dentures.

They survive: As a Prosthodontist , I have many patients with "false teeth" - from partially without teeth to completely without teeth. So they wear partial dentures or complete dentures. Almost all would rather have fixed teeth , preferably their own, rather than removable teeth. However, they all somehow survive and live a full life. They adapt to the changes and determine what they can/can't do comfortably.
