Oxygen toxicity: Hyperoxia likely exists whenever oxygen tension exceeds 21% of atmospheric pressure. It appears to produce cellular injury through increased production of reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, and hydroxyl radical. Oxygen toxicity refers most commonly to resulting tracheobronchial injury and damage to the tissue of the lungs.
