Pinched nerve : Discs between vertebrae should be viewed as little cushions, and if the basket border gets damaged, the nucleus pulpous within can protrude or rupture and press on nearby nerves causing radiating pain to go down the leg. The pain can be termed sciatica, but radiculopathy implies nerve compression at root level close to the spinal cord.

Herniation/Sciatica: The disc is like a jelly filled donut. If the donut is compressed too much the jelly leaks out through a break in the donut's bread. The same is true with a disc, the tear is caused by the compression resulting in a herniation (protrusion) and the jelly (inside portion of the disc) is either leaking out or trying to get out. Radiculitis suggests pain without any deficits noted on exam.
