Knotted bowels: Intussuseption occurs when bowel folds into itself; volvulus is when bowels become twisted--both may result in "knotting" & are emergent conditions. The sensation may also result from autonomic dysfunction with slow transit, dysmotility syndromes, & gut spasms. These situations are distinguished from bowel obstruction.
