One can always: Perform upper body excercises while allowing the achilles to rest. Or, some advocate eccentric excercises on the achilles itself as a treatment. If something hurts when exercising, then likely that excercises should not be performed. So during eccentric excercises if the achilles is hurting avoid that excercise.

Runner's stretch: Stretching the heel cord is an important part of reducing the pain of achilles tendinitis. Some initial discomfort is to be expected in doing these stretches, but they do ease up in time. If you encounter more severe pain, or if there is swelling, bruising, or a palpable nodule in back of the heel cord seek care from a podiatrist or orthopedist. If you have a tear, stretching is not advised.
