Patiently: The optimum function in any case can only be achieved with patient, persistent therapy, very repetitious. Two steps forward, one step back is often the pattern. Emotional support and reassurance is needed on the caregiver's part. Acceptance is necessary on the patient's part. Counseling may be useful for frustration or depression.

The two approaches: To a neurodevelopmental problem are remediation to the best extent possible & circumvention. Remediation is usually the choice in the young, with therapies aimed at improving the quality of ambulation & hand use in the face of abnormal muscle tone & strength. Circumvention is using technology & assistive devices to " get around" the problem. There are many options now;see www.Cerebralpalsy.Org.

Learn to adapt: The important goal is to be as normal as possible. Clever therapists can help. Independence in dressing, washing, feeding, and even toileting are important goals. Ability to be out in stores and restaurants is very important. Good communication is very important. These skills may need special adaptive aides and special training. What was impossible is now possible.
