Many causes exist: Patellar malalignment results from a myriad of causes. Several include a history of prior trauma leading to a subluxation or patellar dislocation. Trauma to the knee can tear the suspending ligament (medial patellofemoral ligament- mpfl) that acts like a checkrein to maintian normal patella tracking. Valgus knees (knocked knees) from abnormal hip and/or knee development can also be a culprit.
