Colposcopy: The next step is usually to take a closer look at the cervix with a procedure called a colposcopy. Biopsies may also be taken at this time to confirm the diagnosis.

Pap smear: It depends upon the abnormality but if this is the first abnormal, then a colposcopy is most likely the next step.
