Try Laser Treatments: Some dentists are practicing laser therapy for "cold sores". Try asking your dentist or google laser treatment of cold sores... We are hearing about significant reduction in frequency of attacks ... Good reports on laser for cold sores from many dentists. This has been my experience with patients as well. Laser treatment results vary as each case is different.

Try antiviral med: If your symptoms are as severe as you say, you might want to have your dentist prescribe antiviral medication like zovirax (acyclovir) to help. Also laser therapy can decrease the pain and reduce the frequency of outbreaks over time.

Prodrome: If you frequently have cold sores, you should be well aware of when you experience the prodrome (early tingling before the outbreak.). Patients who take 2 grams of valtrex, (valacyclovir) and begin using an antiviral cream, such as denavir, can many times prevent the outbreak of the lesion.
