A member asked:

Can you have an abnormal pap because of your menstrual cycle?

Yes: Sometimes endometrial cells can be seen because they are shedding during menses; this would be reported as either endometrial cells or possibly atypical glandular cells, neither of which should normally be seen on a pap. It is best to have the pap test done when you are not menstruating.

Doubtful: Your menstrual cycle will not alter your cervical cells so it can't cause an abnormal pap. However, it may cause endometrial cells to show up on your pap & if you're over 40 yo, your doc may want to evaluate your uterine lining for abnormalities.
