Routine pain meds: Amitripyline (elavil) is a preventative medication. This means that it is taken once a day at a constant dose to reduce the probability of pain. If pain does occur, acute management is then started to stop the pain process. These are two separate methods of management. The third method is to prevent the setting that triggers the pain. Each of these three management methods can work separately.
