Lupus patients and h1n1 flu shot- is it safe?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes, they are safe: Lupus patients tend to have a weakened immune system if they are on immuno-suppressive medications to treat their lupus, so they need annual flu shots (not live nasal vaccine) to help protect against the flu. Since lupus is an immune system disorder, patients should get flu shots to benefit from the vaccine protection even if their lupus is in remission and/or they are not on immuno-suppressants.

Absolutely: Due to your autoimmune disease, you are an absolute perfect patient to receive the vaccination. Make sure you get the flu shot not the nasal mist.
