YES: The new medication that is specific for lupus is benlysta (belimumab). It is given intravenously intially every two weeks for 3 shots then every 4 weeks. It is specific for lupus with a unique method of action targeting certain cells that make most of the antibodies seen in lupus. It is not useful in people with severe kidney or neurologic disease.
