Varies: Everyone is different. Some people do really well on the first antidepressant they try, others are less fortunate. There are different classes of antidepressants, and while some may respond to an antidepressant in the same class as the one just tried, often it is helpful to try one of a different class. Be sure to ask questions and voice your desires with your prescriber, it is your body and you have a right to know what to expect.
