STI: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial cause of sexually transmitted genital infections. The majority of affected people have no symptoms, and therefore provide an ongoing reservoir for infection. It usually causes cervicitis in women, which can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. In men, it causes nongonococcal urethritis. It can also cause epididymitis, prostatitis, and proctitis.
