Why wait???: If it's been 10 years or more since you had a tetanus shot, get one.

Ideally,: You want to get the booster immediately. If indeed infected withe the tetani bacteria one can be symptomatic in as early as 1-2 days. So if you get a bad cut and wait a week that's not a good idea. That likely means you lucked out and were not infected with the particular bacteria.
