Probable Root Canal : Pain can derive from a tooth problem, or a problem with gums or bone surrounding a tooth. Assuming it is from a tooth, that tooth is probably sensitive to tapping or hot &cold. If the sensation lingers for several minutes or longer, the nerve is probably unhealthy and the tooth, if it is structurally sound and worth saving, should have root canal therapy. It should be painless and relieve pain.

Temporary relief: Try any of the over the counter pain medicines particularly Motrin or aleve (naproxen). Ultimately, you will need to see a dentist to get to the cause and solution of the tooth pain.
