Tendon irritation : There are numerous tendons to the fingers which pass through a series of tunnels or pulleys along the outer parts of the wrist. These are organized into 6 tunnels or passages called dorsal compartments. When the first two tendons pass through the first dorsal compartment and become inflamed, most commonly via overuse, we call it dequervain's syndrome. It most commonly occurs in middle aged women.

DeQuervains Syndrome: An irritation of the tendons at the base of the thumb. Pain over the thumb-side of the wrist is the main symptom. The pain may appear either gradually or suddenly, and pain is located at the first dorsal compartment. Tenderness directly over the tendons on the thumb-side of the wrist is the most common finding. Hand and thumb motion increases pain, especially with forceful grasping or twisting.
