Sounds right!: Tinnitus = spontaneous noise (or any auditory perception) for which no external stimulus (sound pressure waves) exists. It can last seconds or decades. It can rumble, chirp, whistle, pop, grind. Many, many causes for this condition, the vast majority of which are not serious.
