Stomach acidity: Our GI system is in continuous operation, with the average adult swallowing 1 quart of saliva/day & the esophagus opening slightly to let it into the stomach. We feed at intervals & the muscular stomach walls squeeze & mix food with stomach acid. If the esophagus opens to accept saliva while the stomach is squeezing, acid is pushed up the esophagus & may burn the walls.Over time this can cause hb.

Agree w Dr Ferguson: Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach refluxs or splashes up into the esophagus (and sometimes the mouth or throat). Heartburn symptoms: Burning pain that may be felt in chest, abdomen or throat that may last minutes to hours. Pain can ^ right after eating, lying down or bending over. It may feel like food is stuck in the throat or chest & swallowing may be more difficult. Bitter/ sour/
