Less successful: Heard that it's possible, but because the vertebrae are able to move, fusion and healing is less successful, so surgeons may not want to take that chance. One source says: immobilization . . . Has been shown to significantly enhance the success of fusion. This is best accomplished by instrumentation. In absence of instrumentation, fusion should be supported by external bracing until it solidifies.

Yes -rare: Typically - just like when building a house, and securing a corner- you need the support of the hardware, and the fusion with bone alone can become unstable. Let the spine surgeon do what they do best when they get there.

RARELY: One level cervical can be performed successfully, they are rarely performed. Anterior extrusion of the bone graft may occur interfering with swallowing. The use of hardware is designed to provide a stable environment to assist in maturation of the fusion, this is especially important in patient who smoke.
