Hernia?: Most lumps in the belly button are umbilical hernias. The key feature is that when you lie down and gently press on the lump, it should go away as the hernia sack empties of its contents. Any mass the size of a golf ball should be checked by a physician.

Get checked: This could be a variety of different things but should be checked. It would be helpful to know how long it has been there whether it comes and goes with different positions and whether you have any other symptoms. Is there any redness on the overlying skin? This could be anything from a hernia to infection to a tumor.
