Symptom control: There's not much you can do at that point except to buy some throat lozenges, cough medicine, and decongestants. Some people swear by things like echinacea, vitamin c, or zinc, but the evidence for them is weak.

Cold treatment: Many people use zinc glauconate lozenges from the store at the first sign of a viral cold. It seems to lessen the severity and duration if started early enough. Mainly, rest and fluids and something for aches and pains seems to be the best treatment. One study showed that gargles with warm salt water and taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helped sore throat from a cold.
