i got my periods once in 8 months will this affect my fertility?

Not ovulating : If you are not having regular periods you are likely not ovulating. Please schedule a visit with an obgyn to discuss irregular cycles and ask to be tested for polycystic ovarian syndrome.

A member asked:
Will weaning make me more fertile?
3 doctor answers • 7 doctors weighed in

Dr. Kathleen Forcier answered
Specializes in General Practice
No: Breast feeding delays the return of ovulation and can help prevent new moms from getting pregnant. If you have a newborn and your period hasn't returned, weaning will likely make you more fertile. But if your baby's a year old and you've been having periods for the last few months, weaning won't matter. (if you really want to prevent pregnancy breast feeding alone is not sufficient birth control.).

A 19-year-old member asked about a 3-year-old member:
Does radiation affect fertility?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Michael Traub answered
Fertility Medicine 19 years experience
Yes: The effects of radiation on infertility depend on the dose, the location, and the number of treatments. It affects both male and female infertility. Anyone about to undergo radiation therapy should have a consultation with a fertility specialist prior to treatment. Low levels of radiation in tests like a ct scan is not harmful unless multiple tests are performed, which is very unusual.

I prefer to say Yes and No as any adverse affects are dependent on the dose. Low doses usually used in medical exams should not affect fertility.

Egg quality: As a woman ages, her eggs decline in number and quality. There are changes in the chromosomes and dna that result in more abnormal embryos, infertility, and miscarriage.

the best advice is to be healthy - eat a healthy diet, be a healthy weight, take a vitamin a day, stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol, manage stress, stay out of hot tubs, see your doctor for a check up.

A 34-year-old member asked:
Can my age be a fertility factor?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Neeoo Chin answered
Fertility Medicine 40 years experience
Yes: Yes, age can be a major contributing factor to fertility. No two people are alike. Therefore we can only quote statistics such as pregnancy rates for women over the age of 40 y/o is 10% per cycle and miscarriage rates are 30-50%. However there are medications and treatments short of donor egg ivf to help improve your chances. All hope is not lost!
