A 40-year-old male asked:

what is polyclonal increase in gamma globulin-consistent with chronic infection/inflammation.?

Just what it says: An increase in serum proteins which suggests underlying infection or inflammation. This is much better than the alternative "monoclonal spike consistent with multiple myeloma....".

Antibiotics plus: The first thing is to make sure it's just an infection and not a cyst or tumor. Infection can typically be treated with antibiotics initially. I usually request that patients use sugar free hard sour candies and hydrate aggressively. If this is unsuccessful, or if infection recurs immediately, the gland can be flushed.

Dr. Barry Rosen

Very, Very rarely: The most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump; others include skin dimpling, nipple discharge, breast pain. There is a rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory ca that will mimic the appearance of a breast infection. The fact is that most women with breast inflammation have a breast infection--regardless, this does warrant physician evaluation.
