A 24-year-old member asked:
How can you tell if my thumb is fractured or broken?
1 doctor answer • 5 doctors weighed in

X-Ray, scan, or MRI: Usually a simple x-ray will give you the answer. Sometimes, especially soon after the injury, the x-ray will initially appear to be normal even though there is a fracture. Your physician if still suspecting a fracture may recommend an mri, or bone scan. Suspicion of fracture goes up with amount of pain and soft tissue bleeding, site of maximum pain, and findings of indirect pain on examination.

What are some of the treatments for metatarsal bone fractures?

Sports Medicine 23 years experience
Cast or boot & rest: Most mildly displaced to nondisplaced traumatic or stress fractures of the metatarsals heal well without the need for surgery. There are a few exceptions, including a specific fracture of the 5th metatarsal called a jones fracture. A boot walker or a cast are often used for treatment, and typical healing occurs in approximately 6 weeks. Crutches may also be used with the cast or boot.

What are the different types of bone fractures?

Many types...: The basic categories would be open or closed, i.E whether there is an associated break in the overlying skin exposing the fracture to the outside and thereby increasing chance of infection. Also, intra or extra articular, i.e.Whether it is involving the joint. Also, comminuted, i.E whether the break involves two or more pieces. And lastly, displaced, that is whether the pieces have moved or not.

A 32-year-old member asked:
How are elbow fractures usually treated?
2 doctor answers • 5 doctors weighed in
Specializes in Orthopedic Surgery
Depends: Some elbow fractures such as fractures of the radial head can sometimes not require any treatment at all other than therapy. Other fractures may require surgey and this depends on the location and severity of the fracture. An x-ray and evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon is needed to make the diagnosis and determine the correct treatment.
