How are spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis generally evaluated?

Imaging: X-rays, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), ct (computerized tomography) are the common diagnostic tools. They are useful when symptoms are disabling despite appropriate conservative treatment.

By a complete : Medical history and physical exam followed by as indicated: plain x-rays or radiographs, ct, bone scan and/or mri. Response or lack of response to treatment is also part of the evaluation if one has symptoms as up to 50% may not have any symptoms.

Xrays: Xrays can make the diagnosis of spondylolisthesis. Xrays can show the relationships of the vertebrae (bones) in your spine and determine if one is slipped relative to the neighboring vertebrae. Ct or MRI scans can confirm or make the diagnosis as well.

Studies and exam: Typically, imaging studies including an MRI, standing flex ion and extension films, possibly a CT scan and of course a consultation with a spine specialist. Check out Spine-health.com.
