What is brawny odema?

Heavy induration: Brawny odema is a term given to inflammation , extending deeply and aggressively into sorrounding areas -whether it it is a skin infection/inflammation , or inside deeper tissurs/internal organs. For example it could be around kidney when kidney is infected and extending into sorrounding areas. Similarly skin infections - cellulitis can cause brawny odema. Cancers can cause brawny odema into sorroun.

Brawny edema: Brawny edema occurs on the legs of patients with vascular insufficiency, where the hemosiderin of the red blood cells lie under the skin and are lysed thus staining the legs a brown color. Chronic ischemia of the limb with thickening, induration, liposclerosis and non-pitting edema occurs in these patients with chronic lymphedema and vasculitis.

Changes noted venous: A change noted on the skin which can be seen with chronic venous insufficiency and is characterized by thickening, induration and non-pitting edema. The brawny color is due to hemosiderin deposits.
