Treat or observe: Renal carcinoma is a primarily surgical disease. Most patients likely benefit from excision of tumors with the option of partial kidney removal allowing preservation of renal function compared to total removal. Newer options for small tumors include thermal ablation where cold or heat destroys the tumor. In some patients with small tumors and poor health or old age, surveillance can be pursued.
