Protective Measures: When lying down certain areas of the body and the overlying skin are subjected to high pressures. Lying on your side can subject your hip area to pressures up to 200lbs/square inch. After 20 minutes at these pressures, the skin starts to break down. Nerves under high pressure signal the brain to cause a shift in body position thus redistributing the pressure to protect the skin.
