What's the utility of having a monthly period?

Depends: If you are not on hormonal contraception, then there is 'utility' to the monthly period - because it sheds ('cleans out') the thickened endometrium that has been prepared by ones hormones in preparation to receive a fertilized egg (in case of conception). If you don't have monthly period - there can be an increased risk of endometrial cancer.

Utility ?: Reproduction is one function humans are well designed to accomplish. The monthly cycle is similar to a males continuous production of sperm. More often would increase the down time the womb is not ready. One cycle/yr may sound convenient but it wouldn't to those trying for a family. Both are designed to improve chances for reproduction at any opportunity.
