Like all wounds: The sclera, the white outer coat of the eye, heals the same as other cut tissue by mobilizing fibroblasts and other mediators of wound repair, buidling protein bridges across the wound and developing a tight seal. Sometimes the internal components of the eye can stick in the gap and interfere with healing. But much eye surgery involves cutting through sclera with good resulting healing.
