Restored function: Kind of a broad question, but if you have a procedure, you would want to resolve the problem. There are different types of bunions and various surgical bunionectomies that can be performed. Bottom line, a surgeon is focused on restoring proper alignment in the joint, restoring proper mechanics in the foot, reducing pain symptoms and providing an aesthetically pleasing foot shape.

Less pain.: A bunionectomy is a procedure to remove the bony "bump" from the inside of your big toe, at the level of the joint. There are many different types of bunionectomy, but the most common involve a small bone cut, sliding a portion of the bone back into place to straighten the foot, and using a small screw to hold it firmly while you heal. The ultimate goal is to reduce your pain and improve motion.

Rest and relax: Immediately after bunion surgery your best bet would be to rest and elevate your feet. Post operative pain will be less if you limit the swelling by elevating the feet. Keep the bandage dry and clean and follow you doctors' instructions.

Relief: Correction of the deformity, less chronic pain, better fitting shoes. This will only occur after the healing process.

Narrower foot: Following a bunionectomy your forefoot will be a bit more narrow and you may fit more comfortably into your old shoes once the swelling subsides.
