May be a fungus : The darkening toenail could be a sign of a fungus infection. It also may be an injury that caused bleeding beneath the nail. Both are treatable! visit a podiatrist to find out the cause and treatment.

Injury/lesion: Could possibly be due to microtrauma to the nail bed or from a lesion ...Should be checked out by a podiatrist.
