There are several : Reasons why: could be just post op pain which resolves once tissues healed & the fusion as well. If the fusion does not fully heal, there can be pain related to that issue. If a fusion extends below L3 but not to the sacrum, there is a higher incidence of back pain later due to accelerated degenerative changes in the non fused disc levels. If spine not balanced after surgery, risk of back pain.
