How can you do squats with chondromalacia (runner's knee)?

Do not squat: You can often get the workout that you need by exercising smartly. Squatting or lunging can cause significant anterior knee pain and it is not good for patients with chondromalacia. You want to focus on quadriceps strengthening exercises that are low impact and keep the arc of motion between 0 degrees (full extension) and around 90 degrees.
