Yes but not always: There are benign causes of elevated bilirubin such as gilbert's disease which are of no concern. Hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) can cause elevated bilirubin. Liver disease is certainly a common cause and should be excluded.

Bilirubin: Gilbert syndrome (normal variant usually less than 4), gallstone obstruction (you'll be very sick), end stage liver disease (again very sick), pancreatic cancer (causing obstruction). Could be many things, go over results with doctor and gi.
